About Us

Valley Interfaith Action is a broad-based, non-partisan, multi-issue volunteer leader-led power organization made up of dues-paying member institutions in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. Our member groups include faith-based congregations, immigrant, neighborhood, and other associations. We bring together leaders and their institutions across the lines that often divide us — political, rural-urban, race, faith, to take action on our common interests and improve the lives of families in our community.

We build power by building community.

We meet people face-to-face and build relationships that help to re-knit the frayed social fabric of our lives.  We don’t seek justice and social change for people, we seek change with people. We stand shoulder to shoulder with directly-impacted leaders. Our power comes from the number and diversity of people we bring together and the institutions they represent.

We tackle big problems by breaking them down into issues that can be addressed. We listen to what’s needed, find like-minded people to work with us for change, and bring together hundreds of diverse, regular people, so we can effectively engage corporate and elected leaders to help us to achieve our goals.

Affiliation with the Industrial Areas Foundation

In June of 2020, the member organizations of Faith in Action (now Valley Interfaith Action) chose to affiliate with the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) to build greater power to build lasting change in our community. Over the past year, we have been partnering with organizers from the IAF and a Northern Virginia affiliate, Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement (VOICE) to grow our base in the Shenandoah Valley. Faith in Action joined the IAF in order to:

  • Increase its collective power to make lasting change in our communities.

  • Participate in consistent training on organizing and developing leaders.

  • Receive mentorship for leaders and staff.

  • Become part of a broader network of organizations with a track record that has nurtured citizen-led action and relationships across the divides that often separate communities.
